Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, early detection and prompt treatment are crucial for preventing the spread of skin cancer and achieving successful outcomes. Regular skin checks and monitoring for changes in the skin are vital components of skin cancer prevention.
Types of Skin Cancer
There are three main types of skin cancer. The main three types of skin cancer are:
- Basal cell carcinoma: A type of skin cancer that develops from UV exposure. Often round, pearly, or darkly pigmented.
- Squamous cell carcinoma: Growths on the outermost portion of the skin, commonly a scaly lesion.
- Melanoma: The most serious form of skin cancer that develops in Melanocytes, the cells that create melanin. Pigmented black or brown colored with irregular/ill-defined borders.
Self-examination for Skin Cancer
Self-examination can help detect early signs of skin cancer. The ABCDE’s is an effective approach when conducting a self-examination, if you notice any warning signs or other changes concerning your skin, seek medical attention.
ABCDE’S of Skin Cancer Detection
- Asymmetry: One half of the mole or lesion is asymmetric to the other.
- Borders: The edges are irregular, poorly defined, or scalloped.
- Color: Not uniform in color, usually brown, black, tan, red, or white.
- Diameter: Larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser). Melanoma can be smaller when first detected.
- Evolving: The mole or lesion is changing in size, shape, color, bleeding, itching, or tenderness. Any changes in moles or lesions should be checked by a doctor.
